This part makes sense, and I've seen it first hand. It hits their ancient DNA.
Dogs evolved drinking from moving bodies of water — it's one of the main things that allowed them to thrive for thousands of years.
So what you're seeing online about dogs drinking more from fountains? It's true.
And it's understandable that you'd want the same thing for your dog.
But there's a missing piece in that conversation.
The reason dogs gravitate towards moving water is because it was recognised as safe, and clean.
But when I actually tested the fountains on the market, I came to a shocking realisation. Most of them made things worse.
Every time your dog drinks, hair, saliva, and bits of food can enter the water.
In the wild, this would be totally fine. Water moves downstream. More water arrives from upstream. Sand and gravel also help naturally filter it along the way.
A fountain on your kitchen floor works differently.
It holds a set amount of water. The pump sends it through the system, into the drinking area, and back around again.
Including whatever gets carried along with it.
It recreates the movement. But fresh water isn't arriving from upstream.
That puts a lot of responsibility on two things:
The surfaces that water touches.
And the filter it passes through.
A plastic bowl can develop scratches with use.
Those grooves can make thorough cleaning more difficult. If you're finding buildup, the condition of that surface deserves attention.
Stainless steel was an obvious place to look next.
But the word “stainless” wasn't enough to settle the question.
Could I remove the bowl? Reach underneath it? Clean the parts the water passed through?

What is the drinking bowl made of — and can you actually get in there to clean it?

When I first opened the fountains, seeing debris on the filters was reassuring.
Hair. Little particles. Things that had clearly been caught.
You look at that and think:
